The Tantra of Sudden Silence

Praise to the Boddhisattva

Akasmat Tushnimbhava

always known by surprise,

the sign of whose presence is

the unanticipated cessation

of a heard but unnoticed

distant pneumatic drill.

Located in a central Buddha Field,

neither East nor West

North, South, Up nor Down,

on a totally transparent lotus

as wide as a planet,

is the Boddhisattva Akasmat Tushnimbhava,

seated in profound repose,

or standing, walking, running,

leaping, leaning forward over a railing,

with gesture of one

whose hands have come to rest

after clapping,

whose face expresses

fierce relief,

whose attributes are:

waking up,

release.

The practice of the Boddhisattva

cannot be consciously pursued

because its condition

is that it awakes from

conscious pursuit.

When sudden silence occurs

the student remains with the dropping-away,

allowing all else to be shed.
