Long Street by Night

The night retreats into its doorways,
the night has ruined all the town;
it blows the wind around all corners,
it pulls all shelter down.

Its dark hand moves through all clothing,
rains through all cardboard, seeps through plastic bags
and old coats. The night is not a place to be
in this street, tonight.
