Gold & Gold Manufacturing Jewellers

The dust is red. It’s everywhere.
They call it rouge, for polishing.
The wall is wiped with faint pink smears
that won’t wash off. The ringing beat
of hammering on steel repeats and repeats.

On the right of the door an old showcase
has a flickering neon light.
The cord dangles loosely showing
red-stained electric tape. The rouge.
In the case are dusty things.

The wildlife calendar pictures
four warthogs jogging tails raised
along a grassy gully near some trees.
The pink dust is on the picture too,
The “today” marker is a week late.

The counter’s glass is scratched.
Under it the rings gleam in rows in trays
Gold and gems. Desire. Craft.
Faded red velvet. Yellowed sticky-tape
which mended a crack in the glass.

The smell of the red dust. The grate
of files rasping and the hammering
in there in the back room
where the flames gleam
.
Where they make these golden things
.
