The Fourth Floor

A surgical equipment firm, three rooms.
A passageway. Two dentists and a shrink.
A closet with the brushes and the brooms
That keep the place clean. The tink tink
Tink of the rope against the metal pipe
Of the flagpole outside in the rain.
This floor is every floor: it is a type,
A figure for all floors in all mid-range
Office buildings everywhere. The same:
A surgical equipment firm, three rooms.
A passageway. The dentists have brass name
Plates on the doors. A closet for the brooms.
The rain rubs sides against the window-pane.
This grey place contained in this grey rain.
