Darling Street isn’t cute—
From the Grand Parade to Adderley Street—
Wellington Fruit Growers' chute
smells of food and cockroach shit,
sweets and second-grade cold meats...

The beggar with the cardboard sign
the beggar with the polio legs
the beggar with the broken child
the broken child who whines and begs.

Sharpshooters guard a money truck.
On the corner, Standard Bank
looms in a grand colonial funk:
more fortified than any tank.
