Jan van Riebeeck stands in bronze
staring at the tops of cars;
he wears somebody else’s face.
His wife is also clothed in bronze:
her dress is frozen stiff.
Seagulls in the dead fountain
wait for the wind to turn away.
Up near the top of the street,
blue assemblies of cops outside
the august Houses of Parliament.
Buses and cars go up and down—
round the circle, round and round.
