6  Falls

In the mind there is a river
of sound which we cannot hear
but as lull lullaby, the lapping
and murmuring bubbling rippling
river water stroking her fingers
down the hard harp of the bank,
exploring rock with a gurgling gesture,
and over water the high pulse
of children whooping at play,
of beasts coming to wet thirst,
of birds, birds, birds, and further,
lower, the dark thunder
of the great falls, where
everything goes down.
