5  Condition

In the mind there is a river
beside which we are always walking and walking,
our hard bare feet rising and falling,
finding footing and leaving footing
and it is our condition
to walk without ceasing
on the banks of the river,
always moving, like water,
to seek among the rushes,
to cross at the smooth stones,
to drink from the cupped hands,
to fear the cataract, the tugging
pull of the perilous rocks, the deep
drowning, breathing ochre water for air.
