4  Rain

In the mind there is a river
longer than lifetimes, beside which
feet place themselves as imprints
on the sand, or as wet marks on stone,
one succeeding the other.
This river is the child of rain;
she has fallen down the sky
like a beating whip or has come
on the stretched-out legs of the clouds
running with antelope speed
to the mountains and the rising land
where she slides from the thunderhead
to lie with her long body
in the grooves of the world.
