2   Danger

In the mind there is a river
of danger, arising in the
utmost mountains, swelling
down hills, curving in loops
through the flat lands;
lions walk in pairs in her night,
all beasts are wary, each rustle
a warning, and the trees
grow low and green, and the
water calls all to drink, to drink.
When we walk beside the river
we go in fear, and if on a safe beach
we strut, swagger or dance,
we do not forget the crocodile's eye.
