Classic Ring XVIII silver, peridot

The ring is inspired by the stone. And again I was concerned to depict a meeting between tradition and modernity. The stone is a new cut, Southern Cross cut, registered by Duncan Miller. The cut has the special distinction of returning more light than any other square cut stone. I thought that it would be interesting to set the stone in a traditional setting. The stones used by Renaissance jewellers, however, were from an earlier technology, which were typically darker and returned less light. The idea, then, was to make a ring which referred to an older pattern, but which abstracted the ring, broadened the proportion of the setting, and in general let in some light. The result is a ring with a pleasing symmetry which is nether old nor modern. |
